Cogveil watch repair bench
Why Cogveil

Work done carefully, results you can read

We make our approach visible — from the written quote before we begin to the timing printout when you collect. This is what choosing an atelier over a counter service actually means.

Six things that shape how we work

Fixed quote before any work

You agree to the cost before we touch the movement. If anything unexpected comes up, we discuss it with you — the quote does not change without your knowledge.

Everything done in-house

We do not pass work on to a third party. The watchmaker who receives your piece is the one who services it, from intake to collection.

Timing machine verification

After every mechanical service, we measure rate accuracy across multiple positions and include the printed readings in the work summary we return with the watch.

Progress photographs (restoration)

For vintage bench restorations, we photograph the movement at each significant stage and share them with you so you can follow along without needing to call in.

Plain-language assessment

Before work begins, we walk you through what we found and what we recommend, in straightforward language. You are never simply handed a total and asked to pay.

Conservative approach to vintage

On older pieces, we avoid unnecessary polishing, over-cleaning, or part substitutions that detract from a watch's original character. The piece returns recognisably itself.

In depth

What each benefit means in practice

Specialist knowledge of mechanical movements

Mechanical watches are not uniform objects. A Seiko 7S26, an ETA 2824, and a Unitas 6497 each have their own tolerances, lubricant specifications, and known wear patterns. Knowing these differences matters when setting end-shake, regulating the balance, or identifying whether a part is worn beyond service. Our experience covers the calibres most commonly encountered in everyday and collector pieces across Malaysia, and we are honest about the ones we are less familiar with.

  • Over fifteen years of bench experience with Swiss and Japanese calibres
  • Familiarity with ETA, Unitas, Miyota, Seiko, FHF and related families
  • Specific experience with heirloom and vintage Malaysian collector pieces

"We think of experience not as a number of years but as the breadth of situations you have worked through. Most of the interesting problems on a watch bench are the ones that sit just outside the manual."

— Razif Haron, Lead Watchmaker

What the documentation includes

  • Intake condition report with photographs
  • Written quote agreed before commencement
  • List of all parts replaced or adjusted
  • Before and after timing readings (mechanical service)
  • Printed service record (vintage restoration)
  • Progress photographs at each stage (restoration)

A documented process from intake to collection

Every mechanical watch benefits from a clear record of what has been done to it. For a collector, this adds to the watch's history. For any owner, it means you know exactly what was serviced and when, which makes the next service interval easier to judge. We produce this documentation as a matter of course — not as an optional extra.

Communication at a pace that suits you

We do not expect you to follow up. For work in progress, we send updates proactively — particularly for longer restorations where progress photographs are shared at each significant stage. If you have a question at any point, we respond within one working day. The same person who handled the intake manages the communication throughout.

Pricing that reflects the actual work

Our published prices are starting points for typical pieces. After a brief assessment, we provide a firm quote. That quote does not move without a conversation. We do not have add-on fees for documentation, timing sheets, or progress photographs — these are included because we think they should be.

Distinctive features

What makes Cogveil different

Printed service record with every restoration

Few ateliers in Kuala Lumpur provide a printed record of restoration work. Ours documents every stage — disassembly notes, parts review, cleaning method, reassembly observations, and final timing results. It accompanies the watch when you collect, and provides a permanent record of the work.

No subcontracting, ever

Some repair operations accept watches at the counter and forward them to external technicians. We do not. Every piece in our care stays at our bench in Jalan Sultan Ismail. This is not a marketing position — it is a practical choice that ensures consistent quality and accountability.

Period-appropriate methods for vintage work

Older watches often respond poorly to modern service approaches designed for current production pieces. We adapt our methods to the age and specification of the movement — using appropriate lubricant grades, handling aged parts with additional care, and avoiding interventions that would alter a watch's historical character.

Scope agreement before commencement

If our initial assessment reveals that a piece needs more — or less — work than the standard programme covers, we discuss the revised scope with you before proceeding. The work only begins when you are comfortable with what has been proposed.
